REPORT: Allen Robinson unlikely to sign contract extension before deadline

by - Senior Writer -

CHICAGO — The Chicago Bears and star wide receiver Allen Robinson were embroiled in a contract controversy early in the 2020 season, with rumors circulating that Robinson would sit out if the Bears did not offer him a contract extension of his liking. Although Robinson, who has played for the Bears since 2018, never inked a new deal last year, he suited up in all 16 regular season games and the Bears' sole playoff game.

It remains to be seen if a similar contract feud will take place this year, as Robinson was franchise tagged by the Bears and reportedly is unlikely to sign a new contract prior to the upcoming July 15 deadline. Robinson, 27, agreed to sign the $18 million franchise tag on March 24 and is expected to once again serve as the Bears' top target this season.

The one-year tender will pay Robinson a pretty penny for his services this year, but Robinson has made it clear in the past that he is eager to sign a contract extension with the Bears. However, various NFL insiders have reported that a new deal is probably not coming anytime soon, meaning more contract drama surrounding the Bears and Robinson could unfold next offseason, as NFL players can be franchise tagged up to three times by the same team.
