Teven Jenkins undergoing surgery; Justin Fields, Cole Kmet battling minor injuries |
CHICAGO — Throughout Chicago Bears training camp, rookie offensive tackle Teven Jenkins has dealt with a back injury that progressed from being described as "back tightness" to being severe enough to require surgery. The Bears announced that the second-round pick will undergo back surgery on Wednesday, with head coach Matt Nagy telling the media that there is hope that Jenkins will be able to return to action and play at some point this season. The writing was on the wall for Jenkins to miss substantial time when the Bears signed veteran offensive tackle Jason Peters last Saturday.
Coach Nagy announced that Teven Jenkins will be undergoing back surgery today saying, "The goal is to get him back this season." As for the Bears' 2021 first-round selection, quarterback Justin Fields has been getting first-team reps at practice this week but will miss Wednesday's practice. Nagy informed reporters that he was holding Fields out of practice because of a minor groin injury. The ailment does not seem to be cause for concern, as Nagy described the decision to prevent Fields from practicing as "extremely conservative." At this time, there is no indication that Fields will be unable to suit up in Saturday's preseason game. The same can be said for second-year tight end Cole Kmet, who is currently limited by a hamstring injury. Bears coach Matt Nagy said that Cole Kmet (hamstring) and Justin Fields (groin) will be “pulled back” at practice today. They’re going to be “extremely conservative” with them.
