Breaking: Cubs expected to DFA their closer Adbert Alzolay

by - Senior Editor -

Tough news for a promising player when healthy.

The Chicago Cubs are expected to DFA former closer Adbert Alzolay this week.

ESPN's Jesse Rogers was the first to report the news.

"Among MLB roster manevuerings today, the Cubs are likely to DFA former closer Adbert Alzolay, a source tells ESPN," Rogers posted on X. "Alzolay underwent Tommy John in August. He won't pitch until late 2025 at the earliest."

In 18 games in 2024, Alzolay had a 4.67 ERA with four saves in nine chances.

When healthy in 2023, he was impressive, with a 2.67 ERA, 67 strikeouts, and only 13 walks in 58 appearances.

Best of luck to Alzolay in the future as he was fun to cover and seemed to be a great guy.
