Cubs place Fulmer on IL, recall pitcher from Iowa

by -

PHOENIX – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain and recalled right-handed pitcher Daniel Palencia from Triple-A Iowa.

Palencia, 23, is 5-2 with a 4.09 ERA (10 ER/22.0 IP) in 21 relief appearances for Chicago in his first major league campaign. He was selected from Iowa July 4 after he combined for 18 outings between Double-A Tennessee and Iowa to start the season. He was optioned to Iowa yesterday as right-handed pitcher Marcus Stroman was activated off the 15-day injured list.

The five-foot, 11-inch Palencia was signed by Oakland as a non-drafted free agent in February 2020. The San Carlos, Venezuela native was acquired by the Cubs July 26, 2021, with outfielder Greg Deichmann, for left-handed pitcher Andrew Chafin. In 52 career minor league games (38 starts), Palencia is 2-5 with a 4.76 ERA (77 ER/145.2 IP), two saves and 186 strikeouts. He entered the 2023 season ranked as the Cubs’ No. 13 prospect per MLB Pipeline.

Fulmer, 30, is 3-5 with two saves and a 4.42 ERA (28 ER/57.0 IP) in 58 games, all but one as a reliever, with Chicago this season. He missed time on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain August 26-September 11 and upon his return appeared in one game, recording the save with 0.2 scoreless innings September 11 in Colorado.
