We are right in the middle of the fervor of the trade deadline as teams try to figure out ways to improve their ballclubs for the second half of the season and a possible postseason run.
ESPN's Jesse Rogers wrote a hypothetical piece Thursday about what it would take for the Mets to trade their All-Star pitcher Jacob deGrom to the North Siders. "A survey of major league baseball scouts, front-office executives (not associated with the Mets or Cubs) and media members zeroed in on a trio of Cubs who could be the centerpiece of a larger deal with the Mets: shortstop Addison Russell, infielder/outfielder Ian Happ and pitcher Mike Montgomery," ESPN said. "Two of those three could start to get it done," one National League scout said. The 30-year old ace would make the Cubs certainly one of the main favorites to win the World Series this season as he would erase most doubts in the rotation even without the reemergence of Yu Darvish from injury. Personally, I would have a hard time giving up both Happ and Russell out of the starting lineup since the Cubs have been hitting so well the last few weeks. However, you have to give up pieces to get quality pitching at the trade deadline. For the season, deGrom has a 5-4 record with a sparkling 1.68 ERA, 142 strikeouts in 115.1 innings over 19 starts.
