CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez was injured while stealing a base in the Cubs' 4-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. In the third inning, Baez slid in hard at second base and was partially clipped by Brewers shortstop Orlando Arcia, who attempted to tag Baez while making contact with him. Once the safe call was made on Baez's steal, "Javy" was seen jerking his neck around in obvious discomfort.

Baez remained in the game for several innings before being removed prior to the seventh inning. According to Cubs manager Joe Maddon, Baez was experiencing pain in his left thumb and neck, which he also injured on a slide three years ago, and was removed from the game once the thumb pain got to the point that Baez was unable to grip his bat handle.

After leaving the contest at Wrigley Field, Baez underwent X-rays on his left thumb, and, fortunately, they came back negative. Baez spoke with reporters following the game and said that his thumb continuously swelled prior to him being taken out of the lineup. As for Baez's neck, it is merely sore, but, nevertheless, the pain caused by the two ailments might result in Baez being given the day off on Monday.
