Jon Lester updates his injury status

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs veteran pitcher Jon Lester left Monday's home opener with a left hamstring injury.

Lester injured his hamstring in the second inning running around third base scoring on a Ben Zobrist single. Previously Lester smacked an RBI double to put the first run on the board during the ballgame.

He was taken out in the third inning after being checked out during a mound visit by manager Joe Maddon and the trainer.

However, the Cubs bullpen showed up big-time in Lester's early exit with seven innings of shutout baseball in the 10-0 win.

Lester spoke with the media during post-game interviews and said it was just a cramp.

"It felt like a cramp," he said. "I didn’t feel it pop or any tingling or any numbness or anything like that. More of a cramping sensation. It was just kinda felt like something was in there grabbing me a little bit. I’ve never really had anything wrong with my legs before. We’ll find out some more tomorrow."

The Cubs will do an MRI on his leg on Tuesday morning as Lester is hopeful that he will make his next start.

"In my mind, I'm making my next start," he said. "Tomorrow may tell us something different and then we'll reevaluate. Everybody on the training side kinda always thinks the worst case scenario. I don't feel that way."

Lester is scheduled to pitch Sunday against the Angels. If Lester can't go, Tyler Chatwood might be the one to get a spot start since Mike Montgomery is currently on the injury list.
