Lester and Grimm to DL, Two Cubs relievers called up |
Chicago Cubs pitchers Jon Lester and Justin Grimm are headed to the the 10-day disabled list prior to Friday afternoon's game.
Lester has no structural problems but has general shoulder fatigue and lat tightness after being evaluated at Northwestern by Dr. Gryzlo. The Cubs dodged a huge issue as it appears that Lester will only miss a few starts. We're pretty sure it'll be minimal time," Maddon said to reporters on Friday afternoon. Mike Montgomery will fill in with the starting rotation while Lester is out according to Maddon. "We think it's just a start or two and Mike Montgomery is more than capable of filling in," Theo Epstein said to reporters. In 2017, Lester has an 8-7 record with 4.37 ERA with 155 strikeouts and a 1.27 WHIP. Grimm's injury is a right index finger infection on his pitching hand that will cause him a stint on the disabled list. To take their spots on the roster and help a tired bullpen, the Cubs will call up Felix Pena and Rob Zastryznky from Triple-A Iowa. In positive Cubs injury news, catcher Willson Contreras played catch for the first time on Friday since his hamstring injury. #Cubs today placed LHP Jon Lester (left shoulder fatigue/lat tightness) & RHP Justin Grimm (right index finger infection) on the 10-day DL. pic.twitter.com/TFiJfkqpPs
