MLB insider ranks David Ross as No. 1 loser of the offseason

by - Senior Editor -

Shockwaves went through the Cubs when the organization fired manager David Ross.

The team didn't make the playoffs after dropping 15 of their last 22 games of the 2023 season.

Swift action followed, with the Northsiders wasting no time in securing the services of former Brewers manager Craig Counsell.

The managerial transition was not just a routine change; it came with a groundbreaking MLB deal. The financial commitment exceeded $40 million, spanning a five-season contract—an unprecedented move in the league.

In the aftermath of these developments, former general manager Jim Bowden weighed in on the offseason happenings in his latest column for The Athletic.

In a surprising twist, Bowden ranked David Ross as the number one loser.

"The Cubs had won nine more games than the previous season but Ross was shockingly fired and replaced by Craig Counsell," he wrote. "Ross deserved better. And since the firing didn’t happen until Nov. 6, he didn’t have an opportunity to interview for most of this offseason’s managerial openings and instead was left out in the cold."

Ross was certainly blindsided by the firing, but don't feel too sorry for him, as he is getting paid this upcoming season by the Cubs without having to manage.
