Report: Montero to be designated for assignment

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs backup catcher Miguel Montero will be designated for assignment and the team will call up 23-year old catching prospect Victor Caratini according to multiple reports. The Cubs will now have a week to trade, release, or waive Montero after putting him on the DFA'd list.

Caratini is a switter hitter that is hitting an impressive .343 at Triple-A Iowa this season.

Montero threw his pitcher Jake Arrieta under the bus for the seven steals in Tuesday night's game.

Rizzo was on ESPN 1000 radio on Wednesday morning and fired back at Montero for his provocative comments.

“It’s frustrating,” Rizzo said. “Whenever anyone steals seven bases, Miggy gets frustrated. It’s the second time barking in the media and not going to his teammates. As a veteran like he is, you’d think he’d make smart decisions about it.”

It appears that the Cubs organization won't put up with anymore of Montero's rants or distractions as he was DFA's 12 hours after his provocative comments.

In 2017, he is batting .286 with four homers and eight RBI.
