WATCH: Craig Counsell reacts to addition of Justin Turner, losing Alex Canario |
Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell spoke to the media before the first spring training game talking about the addition of Justin Turner, the decision to DFA Alexander Canario and much more.
“We’re adding a bat. That was the goal, to add a bat to the group,” Counsell said about Turner. “Justin has been a very good hitter in this league for a long time. It’s largely going to be off the bench kind of at the start. Obviously, things happen during a season.” Watch the interview below: Video summary/cliff-notes: (00:00) Craig Counsell emphasizes that Justin Turner was signed to add depth to the Cubs' lineup, especially at first base, where the team lacked depth. (00:37) Turner is expected to come off the bench initially, particularly against left-handed pitching, but could see more opportunities depending on roster changes and injuries. (01:06) Counsell highlights Turner’s offensive skills, experience, and ability to perform in high-pressure at-bats late in games. (01:39) While Turner could play third base in emergency situations, the Cubs did not sign him for that role. (02:23) Turner’s longevity in the league is credited to his high baseball IQ and elite hitting instincts, which have helped him remain effective despite physical regression. (03:37) Counsell expects Turner to take on a mentorship role, sharing his experience with younger players both during games and in the clubhouse. (04:22) Alexander Canario was the corresponding roster move, which was a difficult decision given his potential, but the team saw limited opportunities for him. (05:44) Counsell says roster decisions will evolve over the next 20 days as things change, and no final decisions are being made yet. (06:49) Michael Busch is focused on improving all aspects of his game, and Counsell praises his clear-headed, team-oriented mentality. (08:01) Turner’s transformation into an elite hitter is attributed to his strong self-awareness and willingness to adapt his game over time. (09:14) Young prospect Alcántara has a bright future, and Counsell emphasizes the importance of consistency and gaining experience for his development.
