Roster Moves: Cubs activate Nick Madrigal, option infielder |
ST. LOUIS – The Chicago Cubs today activated infielder Nick Madrigal from the 10-day injured list and optioned infielder Miles Mastrobuoni to Triple-A Iowa.
Madrigal is in the starting lineup for tonight’s 7:15 p.m. CT game in St. Louis. Madrigal, 26, was placed on the 10-day injured list July 4 with a right hamstring strain. He played in five rehab games with Triple-A Iowa beginning July 21, going 5-for-18 (.278). Madrigal this season is batting .278 (42-for-151) with eight doubles, one triple, one home run and 17 RBI in 53 games with Chicago. In 17 games from June 11-July 3, he hit .358 (19-for-53) with five doubles, one home run, eight RBI, a .424 on-base percentage and a.933 OPS. The right-handed hitting Madrigal owns a career .287 average (190-for-663) with 28 doubles, five triples, three home runs, 56 RBI and 36 walks in 195 major league games with the White Sox (2020-21) and Cubs (2022-23). He has played 151 games at second base, 38 games at third base and five games as designated hitter. Selected by the White Sox in the first round (fourth selection overall) in the 2018 First-Year Player Draft out of Oregon State University, he was acquired by the Cubs at the 2021 trade deadline with right-handed pitcher Codi Heuer for right-handed pitcher Craig Kimbrel. Mastrobuoni, 27, has batted .212 (21-for-99) with three doubles, one home run, four RBI and 12 walks in 42 games with Chicago this season. In 26 games with Iowa, he has hit .305 (25-for-82) with eight doubles, two triples and eight RBI.
