Roster Moves: Cubs place Nico Hoerner on 10-day IL, infielder activated

PHOENIX – The Chicago Cubs today placed infielder Nico Hoerner on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 12) with a right ankle sprain and activated infielder Andrelton Simmons off the 10-day injured list.

Simmons, 32, was placed on the 10-day injured list on April 4 with right shoulder inflammation. He made six rehab appearances with Triple-A Iowa starting May 7, hitting safely in two of his games and reaching safely in three.

The six-foot two-inch Simmons last season batted .223 (92-for-412) with three home runs and 31 RBI in 131 games for Minnesota, compiling a .976 fielding percentage (12 E/501 TC) at shortstop. He finished the season with the second-most defensive runs saved among major league shortstops (14) and tied for the fourth-most overall. He was named the winner of the Jim Kaat Award as the Twins Defensive Player of the Year.

The right-handed hitting Simmons has played in 1,191 games in all or part of 10 major league seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2012-15), Los Angeles Angels (2016-20) and Twins (2021), appearing in 145 or more games five times. He owns a career .265 average (1,156-for-4,366) with 200 doubles, 23 triples, 70 home runs and 437 RBI. His .981 fielding percentage at shortstop is the best mark for an active player with at least 1,000 games at the position.

Simmons is a four-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner (2013-14 with Atlanta, 2017-18 with the Angels) and joins Omar Vizquel and Orlando Cabrera as one of three shortstops in major league history to win Gold Gloves in both the American and National Leagues. Simmons is the 11th player in major league history to win four-or-more Gold Gloves as a shortstop. Additionally, Simmons won the N.L. Platinum Glove in 2013, awarded to the “best defensive player in each league.”

Simmons was selected in the second round of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft by Atlanta after playing two seasons at Western Oklahoma State Junior College. He was acquired by the Angels from the Braves in November of 2015 with catcher José Briceño for infielders Erick Aybar and Chris Ellis and left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb.

Hoerner, 25, is hitting .271 (26-for-96) with four doubles, one triple, two home runs and 11 RBI in 29 games for Chicago this season. His .991 fielding percentage (1 E/108 TC) is second among all shortstops.
