Roster Moves: Cubs recall Justin Steele, option lefty reliever

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled left-handed pitcher Justin Steele from Triple-A Iowa and optioned left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan to Iowa.

Steele is slated to make his first career start in the first game (1:20 p.m. CT) of today’s split doubleheader vs. the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field.

Steele, 26, is 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA (2 ER/20.2 IP) in five starts with Iowa after he was activated from the 10-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A, July 8, holding the opponent to a .151 average, a .253 on-base percentage and a .431 OPS. He has walked nine and struck out 27, allowing just two extra-base hits in 83 batters faced.

The six-foot two-inch Steele landed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain, May 21. Prior to the injury, Steele in his first major league action was 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA (3 ER/13.1 IP) in 11 relief appearances for the Cubs, walking seven and striking out 21 with a 1.05 WHIP. He has averaged 14.2 strikeouts per 9.0 innings and allowed 4.7 hits per 9.0 innings.

Ryan, 29, has no record, one save and a 5.54 ERA (8 ER/13.0 IP) in 12 relief appearances for the Cubs this season.
