Wade Davis signs record-breaking contract with NL team

by - Senior Editor -

Former Chicago Cubs closer Wade Davis has agreed to a three-year deal worth $52 million with the Colorado Rockies on Friday according to multiple reports.

The deal has a fourth-year vesting option that could turn the deal to $66 million and the deal should be announced shortly because Davis has already passed his physical.

The deal is the highest per year contract ($17.33) for a reliever in MLB history and the Rockies have the most expensive bullpen in the majors.

The Cubs will now have their fourth different closer in four years with the departure of Davis. It was always going to be a tough get for the North Siders to keep Davis with them as they were still searching for another frontline starter and didn't want to fly past the luxury tax for next season and beyond.

For the season, Davis had 32 saves to go with a 2.30 ERA, 79 strikeouts, and 1.14 WHIP. His 32 saves ranked him fifth in the National League. In his career, he has 79 saves with 3.45 ERA.

The good news for the Cubs is that they made Davis a qualifying offer so they will get a draft pick compensation (around 75th overall) for him.
