Ben Johnson on Cole Kmet's role in new Bears offense |
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson spoke at the NFL owners meetings on Tuesday, addressomg how he envisions utilizing starting tight end Cole Kmet in his offense.
"I can't answer that question yet because I haven't been on the field with him, so we'll see what he can do," Johnson said. "I know he still has room to grow as a run blocker—we've already discussed ways to improve that. But as a pass catcher, we're going to put him in the best position to succeed." Johnson might be expanding Kmet's role around the field. "We might try to move him around to different spots—from outside the numbers to being attached and everywhere in between," Johnson explained. "I'm excited to work with him." In 2024, Kmet had 47 catches for 474 yards and four touchdowns. Johnson knows that Kmet is a high-character guy that is good to have on your team. "When he was coming out [of college], I remember telling the team I was with, 'This guy is like a Boy Scout. The kind of guy you’d want your daughter to marry.' I know he's going to be a key piece of what we do this year."
