Report Card: Bears Position Grades after loss to Texans |
The Bears have had a bumpy start to the season offensively, but they are now 1-1 after a tough game in Houston.
So, let’s hand out our Bears grade from the loss to the Texans: QUARTERBACK D Caleb Williams has gotten off to a rocky start. Williams was 23-of-37 for 174 yards on Sunday against the Texans. Williams — as has been the case for Justin Fields and Mitch Trubisky — was under heavy pressure and was the victim of a few drops from his receivers. Williams was sacked seven times and pressured 36 times on 44 dropbacks. However, Williams threw two costly interceptions and is still looking for his first passing score. He added 44 yards on the ground. RUNNING BACKS F D’andre Swift, Travis Homer, and Khalil Herbert combined for just 17 touches and 27 yards—it was not a great outing. The Bears were behind chains a lot, which made it difficult to run the ball. Swift had some explosive plays, and Herbert ran in a touchdown. Swift and Herbert combined for 6 catches and 28 yards through the air. There is not much to report here, and that is an issue. A rookie quarterback’s best friend is a run game. RECIEVERS D+ The WR trio of DJ Moore, Keenan Allen, and Rome Oduzne was not spectacular in week 2. For starters, Allen sat with an injury. Moore had five catches for 53 yards, and Rome Odunze had two grabs for 33 years, dropping a touchdown. DeAndre Carter also had three catches for 32 yards. TIGHT ENDS D- Cole Kmet had four catches for 27 yards, and Gerald Everett caught two passes. It was a very disappointing outing for this position room. OFFENSIVE LINE F The offensive line was horrible, allowing heavy pressure on Caleb Williams and SEVEN sacks. If the Bears have any playoff aspirations, we will certainly need to see more from this unit. DEFENSIVE LINE C+ The Bears came away with three sacks against the Texans. Gervon Dexter Sr. had a very strong game, and the Bears will look to get Montez Sweat involved more. LINEBACKERS B+ T.J. Edwards’ 8 tackles and Tremaine Edmunds’ 11 helped pace the Bears linebackers, who were excellent on Sunday, including a sack from Jack Sanborn. This unit looks poised to improve on their strong 2023. SECONDARY B+ Jaylon Johnson’s All-Pro journey is off to an excellent start despite Nico Collins’ big day. Kyler Gordon dropped what could have been a game-changing interception. But this unit did a great job preventing damage all day. SPECIAL TEAMS B DeAndre Carter was active in the return game. Two field goals from Cairos Santos, plus an extra point and two punts inside the 20 from Tory Taylor, set the tone for a solid special teams unit. COACHING C The playcalling wasn’t spectacular. This team has a rookie quarterback who needs the coaching to do everything possible to make it easy for him. Patrick Mahomes could not have succeeded under those conditions Sunday night. However, the defense was strong, and the Bears stayed in it.
