Cubs announce several roster moves |
WILLIAMSPORT – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Craig Kimbrel off of the 10-day injured list and recalled outfielder Mark Zagunis from Triple-A Iowa. Right-handed pitcher Duane Underwood was optioned to Triple-A Iowa following yesterday’s game. Both Kimbrel and Zagunis, who will serve as the club’s 26th man for tonight’s game, will be available for the Cubs when they conclude their three-game series against Pittsburgh in Williamsport.
Kimbrel, 31, was placed on the 10-day injured list with right knee inflammation on August 5 (retroactive to August 4) and did not require a rehab assignment as part of his return. He has gone 0-2 with nine saves and a 5.68 ERA (8 ER/12.2 IP) in 14 relief outings with the Cubs this season. Zagunis, 25, joins the Cubs for the second time this season as he was a member of the club’s Opening Day roster and batted .257 (9-for-35) with three doubles and five RBI in 29 games before being optioned to Triple-A on May 25. With Iowa, Zagunis has hit .296 (67-for-226) with 25 doubles, five home runs and 38 RBI in 59 games with an .841 OPS. Overall, Zagunis is a career .204 hitter (11-for-54) with four doubles and seven RBI in 41 major league games covering parts of the last three seasons with the Cubs. Underwood, 25, has posted no record and a 2.70 ERA (1 ER/3.1 IP) in three relief outings with the Cubs this season.
