Roster Moves: Cubs select lefty pitcher Luke Little from I-Cubs, pitcher designated for assignment

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected left-handed pitcher Luke Little from Triple-A Iowa and designated right-handed pitcher Shane Greene for assignment.

Little will wear uniform No. 43 and looks to make his major league debut.

Little, 23, has combined to post a 5-2 record with one save and a 2.12 ERA (15 ER/63.2 IP) in 36 games (four starts) between High-A South Bend, Double-A Tennessee and Iowa this season. He has walked 42 and struck out 105 in 63.2 innings, good for an average of 14.4 strikeouts per 9.0 innings. In eight relief appearances with Iowa beginning August 5, Little has pitched to a 1.54 ERA (2 ER/11.2 IP) with seven walks, 21 strikeouts and a .186 opponent batting average, including a .167 average and a .542 OPS by left-handed hitters.

The six-foot eight-inch Little in 2022 struck out 101 batters in 65.2 innings for an average of 13.8 strikeouts per 9.0 innings between Low-A Myrtle Beach and South Bend. He was named the Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July after posting a 1.15 ERA (2 ER/15.2 IP) with 25 strikeouts in five starts for Myrtle Beach. Little finished last season with a 2.47 ERA (18 ER/65.2 IP) in 24 games, all but two in a starting role.

Little was selected by the Cubs in the fourth round of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft out of San Jacinto Junior College in Texas. In three minor league seasons he has compiled a 6-8 record with one save and a 2.50 ERA (39 ER/140.1 IP) in 65 games (30 starts). He has allowed two home runs in 614 batters faced, walked 85 and struck out 225 batters for an average of 14.4 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.

Greene, 34, was selected by Chicago September 1 and appeared in one game, throwing a scoreless inning of relief September 3 in Cincinnati.
