Three Cubs players removed from 40-man roster with Higgins, Giambrone, Sampson

The Chicago Cubs have outrighted catcher P.J. Higgins, infielder Trent Giambrone, and pitcher Adrian Simpson to Iowa on Saturday according to the MLB transaction page.

All three players are eligible to be minor league free agents on Monday. The trio of players will likely get some offers across the MILB level, so likely, they will be moving on from the Cubs to get a fresh start.

Giambone was a solid prospect for the Cubs but never got much of a sniff at the big league level.

He had two hits in 13 at-bats with the Cubs this past season.

Higgins was a decent backup catcher prospect for the Cubs and I'm sure the Cubs will have it back at Iowa if he decides that he wants to reup with the organization. You never can have enough catching depth as Willson Contreras will need a few more days off as his career moves forward.

Higgins has only one hit in 23 career big-league at-bats.

Sampson was an intriguing starting pitcher but was likely not to have much of a chance to have a starting rotation spot in 2022.

He had a 1-2 record with a 2.80 ERA with the Cubs last season.

The Cubs' 40-man roster is now down to only 32 players.

Stay tuned to CubsHQ all offseason as there will be plenty of news and notes regarding the roster turnover for 2022.
