Craig Counsell updates Bellinger's injury timeline

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs outfielder Cody Bellinger was hit by a pitch on his left hand during Wednesday's game against the Baltimore Orioles.

On Thursday, Bellinger was on placed the 10-day injured list with a left middle finger fracture.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell told the media about the probable injury timeline of Bellinger's injured finger.

“He’s basically going to be shut down through the All-Star break,” Counsell said. “And then when we come back from the All-Star break, he’ll kind of start the range-of-motion rehab with the finger and we’ll see where that takes us. That’s basically where we’re at. It’s going to be some time after the All-Star break. He’s just going to see how it feels and we’re going to have to see how it’s healing.”

Bellinger is hitting .269 with nine home runs and 37 RBI for the Cubs in 79 games this season. Over his last 20 games (since June 18), Bellinger is hitting .303 (23-for-76) with five RBI.

“That’s basically where we’re at,” Counsell said. “Look, we're losing the guy that hits third in the lineup every day. So that hurts. You don't replace that necessarily. It means we have to kind of circle the wagons while he's out and do our best to continue what's been a pretty decent offensive stretch here.”

In Bellinger's center field spot, look for Pete Crow-Armstrong to get the majority of the starts while Bellinger is sidelined.

“It’s just so frustrating. I like playing every day,” Bellinger said. “I don’t know how long this is going to take just to get back going. It’s part of it. I’ll do whatever I can to make sure, when I am healthy, I’ll be ready to roll.”
