Cubs Roster Move: Mark Leiter Jr. clears waivers, sent to Iowa

Tony Crumpton Tony Crumpton  ·  Senior Editor ·

Chicago Cubs pitcher Mark Leiter Jr. cleared waived and was outrighted to Triple-A Iowa on Thursday.

Leiter was designated for assignment last week to make room for veteran first baseman Eric Hosmer.

No other team placed Leiter on their 40-man roster, so now he is headed to Iowa for pitching depth for the Cubs.

In 2022 in 35 games, he had a 2-7 record with a 3.99 ERA with 1.14 WHIP. As a reliever, he was exceptional with a 2.87 ERA with 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings in 31 appearances.

This is a great pitcher to have in your back pocket when injuries end up happening every season.
