Cubs trade outfield prospect Alexander Canario to Mets

The Chicago Cubs have traded outfield prospect Alexander Canario to the New York Mets for cash considerations on Monday night.

The Cubs DFA'd him last week to make room for veteran infielder Justin Turner.

Canario has a .286 average with two homers and 8 RBIS in 21 career games in two seasons.

The move was made because he had no minor league options left, and the Cubs outfield was already crowded with PCA, Ian Happ, Kyle Tucker, and Seiya Suzuki.

Kevin 'Jaguar' Alcantara has also been very impressive in Cubs camp and likely had surpassed Canario on future depth charts in the outfield.

Canario was acquired originally from the Cubs along with pitcher Caleb Kilian in the Kris Bryant trade in 2021.

The move was necessary for the Mets as former Cubs player Nick Madrigal suffered an injury and more depth was needed.

"Nick Madrigal's MRI showed a fracture in his left shoulder. He'll go for a CT scan for more info, but he'll be out for a long time (60-day IL)," said Mets head coach Carlos Mendoza.
