Chicago Cubs outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong changed his Cubs jersey number from #52 to #4.

“Jed is really good about coming down and — for lack of better terms — being one of the guys,” Crow-Armstrong said on Friday. “So, I’ve appreciated his openness to my shenanigans and the hair and all that stuff, so I’ve appreciated the relationship.”

Hoyer told him if he sank a basketball shot, PCA had to change his number.

“He was like, kind of talking some crap, like, ‘Hey, you’re wearing a lineman’s number and all this stuff,” Crow-Armstrong said. “I wasn’t gonna say no to the boss, so I went with it and he sunk it and for a little while here, it’s been like, is he being for real?”

PVA chose a fast-person number.

“I guess a fast guy number looks like [no.] 4,” Crow-Armstrong said. “So I’m rocking with the [Ohio State wide receiver] Jeremiah Smith comparison because he’s doing pretty good for himself right now.”

Video summary/cliff-notes:

(00:00) Pete Crow-Armstrong changed his jersey number after Cubs president Jed Hoyer jokingly challenged him to do so.

(00:35) Hoyer teased Crow-Armstrong about wearing a "lineman's number" and bet him that if he made a basketball shot, he’d have to change it.

(01:14) Crow-Armstrong had no initial plans to switch from 52, as he felt sentimental about it being his debut number.

(01:42) He ultimately embraced the change, appreciating the lighthearted and inclusive culture that Hoyer fosters.

(02:13) The idea of a “fast guy number” was discussed, with single digits being considered, but Crow-Armstrong settled on 4.

He humorously mentioned that he’d rather wear double zero than the number one.

He compared his new number to football player Jeremiah Smith, who is thriving while wearing number 4.
