CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian from Triple-A Iowa and placed infielder Nick Madrigal on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to June 12) with a left groin strain.

Kilian is scheduled to make his second career major league start in tonight’s 7:05 p.m. CT game versus San Diego at Wrigley Field.

Kilian, 25, made his major league debut in game two of the split doubleheader June 4 versus St. Louis. The righthander received a no-decision, allowing three runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 5.0 innings. He retired the first nine batters he faced in order, four on strikeouts.

The six-foot, four-inch Kilian has made 10 starts for Triple-A Iowa this season, going 2-0 with a 2.51 ERA (12 ER/43.0 IP). The right-handed pitcher has struck out 47, compared to 16 walks, good for a 1.35 WHIP. His 2.51 ERA is the fourth-lowest among International League starters (min. 40.0 IP). He allowed two-or-fewer runs in eight-straight starts to begin the campaign.

Kilian was acquired by the Cubs from the San Francisco Giants with outfielder Alexander Canario for infielder Kris Bryant, July 30, 2021. The righthander pitched for Mesa in the Arizona Fall League following the 2021 season, tossing 6.0 perfect innings in the AFL Championship game. In parts of three professional seasons, Kilian is 9-4 with a 2.20 ERA (39 ER/159.1 IP), 176 strikeouts and a 0.97 WHIP in 36 career minor league games (35 starts).

An Anaheim, Calif. native, Kilian was selected by the Giants in the eighth round of the 2019 First-Year Player Draft after pitching three seasons for Texas Tech University.

Madrigal, 25, is batting .222 (24-for-108) with three doubles and two RBI in 31 games during his first campaign with the Cubs this season.
