Kyle Schwarber signs with Nationals |
There will be no 2021 reunion with 'Schwarbs' on the Northside.
The Washington Nationals have signed outfielder Kyle Schwarber to a one-year deal worth $7 million on Saturday according to ESPN. The contract includes an $11 million mutual option in 2022 or a $3 million buyout. The Cubs decided to let Schwarber go (non-tendered) instead of paying him a projected $7-9 million for the 2021 season. “We all love Kyle and what he's done here for the Cubs and would welcome him back with open arms,” Ross said recently. "I have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of teams picking up the phone to call his agent.” He was a free agent after spending six seasons with the Cubs. In 2020, he hit a career-worst .188 with 11 homers, 24 RBI, and a .701 OPS in 59 games. Overall, he hit .230 with 121 homers in 551 total games with the Cubs. The 27-year-old will hope to have a solid season in 2021 and test free agency for a longer deal. According to beat writers that cover the Nationals, Schwarber will likely play left field, and Juan Soto will be moved to right field. Schwarber will have some familiarity with the Nationals as he will be reunited with former Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez, the Nationals manager. Best of luck to Schwarber, as he certainly was a fan favorite during his time in Chicago. More to come on this breaking story. Outfielder Kyle Schwarber and the Washington Nationals are in agreement on a one-year, $10 million deal, sources familiar with the situation tell ESPN. First with the deal: @dougherty_jesse. So market turns out pretty good for Kyle Schwarber who was non tendered last month. Got a little more (10 mil) than he would probably have through arbitration. Kyle Schwarber to sign one-year, $10M deal with Nationals, per @JeffPassan pic.twitter.com/Hqf1wvQiFM Turns out Kyle Schwarber made out better financially in 2021 with his new one-year, $10 million contract with the #Nats than if the #Cubs had kept him and taken him to salary arbitration. About half dozen or more teams showed interest in Schwarber. Not too often a non tendered player gets more than he would have through arb. Always a market for lefty sluggers.
