REPORT: Bears signing veteran kicker |
CHICAGO — Kicker Cairo Santos kicked for the Chicago Bears in 2017, but a groin injury ended that stint early on, with Santos going 1-for-2 on field goals and 2-for-2 on extra points before being placed on injured reserve. Now, the Bears are reportedly adding Santos to the mix in order to provide incumbent starting kicker Eddy Pineiro with some competition.
Santos is most remembered for his 2014-17 tenure with the Kansas City Chiefs and is also known for winning the coveted Lou Groza Award while a college kicker at Tulane. The 28-year-old kicked in five games for the Tennessee Titans last season. He is expected to join the Bears upon clearing COVID-19 protocol. Bears are expected to sign former Chiefs’ kicker Cairo Santos after he clears Covid testing protocol Sunday, per source. Cairo Santos kicked two games for the Bears in 2017. His best years were 2014-16 when he made 86 of 102 FGs for the Chiefs. Last season, he kicked 5 games for the Titans and made 4 of 9. UPDATE: According to Dan Wiederer of the Chicago Tribune, Pineiro is apparently dealing with a groin injury that the Bears are keeping tabs on. Pieneiro did not make any kicks of any kind in Saturday's scrimmage. That likely explains the Santos signing. Eddy Pineiro didn't attempt a FG, a PAT or a kickoff in Saturday's controlled scrimmage. As it turns out, he has a groin injury that the Bears are monitoring.
