WATCH: Lackey, Contreras ejected vs. Cardinals |
Chicago Cubs starter John Lackey and starting catcher Willson Contreras have been ejected in the fifth inning from Friday afternoon's game for arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Jordan Baker.
An apparent strike three call should have ended the inning as Carlos Martinez was already walking back from the batter's box to the dugout, but the pitch was called a ball. Of course, Martinez hit a RBI single on the next pitch, and the Cubs went bonkers especially Lackey and Contreras. Lackey obviously argued, and Contreras was restrained as he was upset by the turn of events in the ballgame. Contreras could be facing a short suspension for throwing his face-mask towards the direction of the umpire. Catcher Alex Avila and reliever Justin Wilson are now in the game for the departed players. Check out the crazy video below. The sequence of the John Lackey meltdown after a horrible call. Call hurts #Cubs
Single worst missed strike call of the season just cost the @Cubs their pitcher, catcher-and a run in critical game with @Cards. #scandal ?? pic.twitter.com/EBGJWCKfgf
Pitch 5 was called a ball. If that's called a strike, like it should be, it's still a tied game. It's a huge series. MLB umps, get it right. pic.twitter.com/p4GmxPMnxu
