CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. from Triple-A Iowa.

Edwards Jr., who will wear uniform number six, will serve as the club’s 26th man for both games of today’s doubleheader as the Cubs conclude their three-game series with the San Diego Padres.

The 24-year-old made his major league debut for the Cubs last season, posting no record with a 3.86 ERA (2 ER/4.2 IP) in five relief appearances. He has posted no record with a 2.38 ERA (3 ER/11.1 IP) in 11 relief appearances with Iowa this season, limiting opponents to a .190 batting average while striking out 18 batters in 11.1 innings, an average of 14.3 strikeouts per nine innings.

Edwards Jr. began the 2015 campaign with Tennessee and turned in a 2.66 ERA (7 ER/23.2 IP) in 13 relief appearances to earn his first promotion to Triple-A in late May. Edwards Jr. was named to the U.S. Team in the 2015 Futures Game (0.2 scoreless innings pitched) before capping his Triple-A campaign with a 3-1 record, two saves and a 2.84 ERA (10 ER/31.2 IP) in 23 relief outings.

The righthander joined the Cubs with right-handed pitchers Justin Grimm and Neil Ramirez and infielder Mike Olt in the trade that sent pitcher Matt Garza to Texas in 2013. He was originally selected by the Rangers in the 48th round of the 2011 Draft out of Prosperity, South Carolina. Edwards Jr. is 19-10 with six saves and a 2.05 ERA (69 ER/303.2 IP) in 97 career appearances, 49 as a starter, in five minor league seasons. He has struck out 387 batters in 303.2 innings pitched, nearly 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings.
