CINCINNATI – The Chicago Cubs today placed left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan on the bereavement list and recalled right-handed pitcher Alec Mills from Triple-A Iowa. Mills will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their four-game series at the Cincinnati Reds.

Mills, 27, joins the Cubs for the third time this season, as he made a pair of starts for the Cubs last month and posted no record with a 4.35 ERA (5 ER/10.1 IP) in those outings. He was also with the big league club from April 21-23 but did not appear in a game. Mills made seven appearances (two starts) for the Cubs last season, going 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA (8 ER/18.0 IP) while limiting foes to a .172 batting average.

With Iowa this year, Mills has gone 6-3 with a 4.94 ERA (51 ER/93.0 IP) in 17 appearances (16 starts), pitching six innings or more in nine of his last 10 outings, including each of his last eight.

Mills returned to the big leagues last year for the first time since 2016, when he made three relief appearances for the Kansas City Royals, posting no record and a 13.50 ERA (5 ER/3.1 IP). He was acquired by the Cubs on February 8, 2017 from the Royals for minor league outfielder Donnie Dewees. Mills spent most of last year with Iowa, going 5-12 with a 4.84 ERA (67 ER/124.2 IP) in 23 starts.

The righthander was originally selected by the Royals in the 22nd round of the 2012 Draft out of the University of Tennessee at Martin. He is 32-38 with nine saves and a 3.64 ERA (258 ER/638.0 IP) in 141 games (113 starts) covering eight minor league campaigns in the Royals and Cubs organizations.

Ryan, 27, is 3-1 with a 2.80 ERA (14 ER/45.0 IP) in 52 relief outings with the Cubs this year.
