Cubs recall righty for doubleheader

by - Senior Editor -

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Kohl Stewart from Triple-A Iowa. He will serve as the “27th man” for the club’s nightcap of today’s split doubleheader vs. the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Stewart, 26, looks to make his Cubs debut after he signed a one-year major league contract in January. He is 4-3 with a 4.79 ERA (33 ER/62.0 IP) in 17 major league games (six starts) with the Twins in 2018-19. Stewart was 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA (15 ER/36.2 IP) in eight games (four starts) for Minnesota at the age of 23 in his MLB debut season in 2018. In 2019, Stewart appeared in nine games (two starts) in seven stints with the Twins, going 2-2 with a 6.39 ERA (18 ER/25.1 IP).

The six-foot three-inch Stewart signed with Baltimore as a free agent in December of 2019 but did not appear in a game for the Orioles as he opted out of the 2020 campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Stewart owns a 3.60 ERA (265 ER/661.2 IP) with a 39-40 record and two complete games in 131 career minor league games, all but six as a starter, with 259 walks and 486 strikeouts. He was originally selected by the Twins in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2013 draft out of St. Pius X High School in Houston, Texas.
