Report: Cubs first baseman Dominic Smith opts out with team

According to multiple reports on Friday night, Chicago Cubs first baseman Dominic Smith has opted out of his minor league contract with the team.

Despite his hot spring, Smith was told he would not be part of the Opening Day roster.

He hit .346 with a homer and had a .909 OPS this spring.

The Cubs decided to keep DH Garrett Cooper on the roster as one of the last bench spots with Patrick Wisdom's injury.

Also, the Cubs seem to be very comfortable with youngster Michael Busch to start the season at first base.

Smith should find work on another team as the 28-year-old still seems to be a solid hitter.
