Report: Cubs to promote Spencer Patton |
The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Spencer Patton from Triple-A Iowa. Left-handed pitcher Brian Matusz has been designated for assignment.
Patton will be available for the Cubs tonight as they begin a three-game series against the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field. The 28-year-old Patton joins the Cubs for the third time this season having posted a 1-1 record with a 5.11 ERA (7 ER/12.1 IP) in nine big league outings. With Iowa, he has gone 1-0 with eight saves and a 0.90 ERA (3 ER/30.0 IP) in 29 relief appearances. Patton has walked only 11 hitters while striking out 49 in 30.0 innings, good for an average of 14.7 strikeouts per nine innings. He has limited foes to a .183 batting average and a 1.00 WHIP. Patton broke into the big leagues with Texas in 2014 and went 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA (1 ER/9.1 IP) in nine big league relief appearances before splitting the 2015 campaign between the Rangers and Triple-A Round Rock. He was acquired by the Cubs from Texas last November. Overall, Patton is 3-2 with a 6.31 ERA (32 ER/45.2 IP) in 45 major league relief outings, averaging more than one strikeout per inning with 48 strikeouts in 45.2 frames. Matusz, 29, made the start for the Cubs last night and allowed six runs in 3.0 innings pitched, recording a no-decision in the Cubs 7-6, 12-inning win vs. Seattle.
