REPORT: Two Cubs pitchers going on the DL

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs veteran starter John Lackey and setup man Hector Rondon are headed to the disabled list on Friday according to multiple reports.

Lackey has had stiffness in his shoulder in his last start on Sunday and Rondon has had experienced triceps soreness in his right arm the last month. Hopefully, the Cubs are just trying to use precaution on the two veteran players as the end of the regular season is still six weeks way. Both players will not be able to return to the big-league club until September 1 when the rosters are expanded.

Iowa Cubs pitchers Felix Pena and Rob Zastryzny will be called up to the Chicago Cubs on Friday to take the place of the veteran pitchers.

Zastryzny has a 4.33 ERA as a starter in 81.0 innings at Triple-A Iowa this season. He could be used as a spot start if John Lackey has be placed on the disabled list. Zastryzny is the first Theo Epstein drafted pitcher to reach the major leagues for the Cubs and was scratched for his Thursday start so he could be ready for the big-league transition.

The 26-year old Pena has a 3.41 ERA with three saves in 63.1 innings giving up only 46 hits and 24 runs. He will more than likely be used out of the bullpen to give the Cubs some added depth.
