CHICAGO — Putting a charge into an 84-mph slider and sending it into the center field bleachers, right fielder Kris Bryant made perfect contact on an 0-1 count and provided the Chicago Cubs with an early 2-0 lead via a 393-foot two-run tater on Sunday. In the ensuing at-bat, first baseman Anthony Rizzo skied a dinger of his own on a full count, with the back-to-back bombs off starter Caleb Smith, a former Cubs prospect, placing the North Siders up 3-0 atop the Arizona Diamondbacks in the bottom of the first.

The 17th long ball of the season for No. 17 plated catcher Willson Contreras, who drew a leadoff walk in the preceding plate appearance, and increased Bryant's 2021 RBI total to 50. As for Rizzo, he now has 12 homers and 36 RBIs on the year. "Big Rizz" belted a 90-mph four-seamer 407 feet out to right field, livening up the Wrigley Field crowd with the no-doubter. As a result of the round-tripper, Rizzo passed former third baseman Aramis Ramirez for outright sixth place on the Cubs' all-time home run leaderboard. He has powered out 240 round-trippers as a member of the Cubs.
