Cubs bring up lefty, option two pitchers

by -

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected the contract of left-handed pitcher Matt Dermody from the club’s South Bend Alternate Site. Following last night’s game, right-handed pitchers Adbert Alzolay, who yesterday served as the 29th man, and right-handed pitcher Tyson Miller were optioned to South Bend.

Dermody, who will wear uniform number 45, will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their five-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field.

Dermody, 30, signed a minor league contract and was added to the Cubs 60-Man Player Pool in South Bend on August 6 after spending time with the Sugar Land Skeeters this season. He has pitched parts of two seasons in the big leagues with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2016 and 2017, combining to go 2-0 with a 5.33 ERA (15 ER/25.1 IP) in 28 relief appearances.

A native of Norwalk, Iowa, Dermody was originally selected by the Blue Jays in the 28th round of the 2013 Draft out of the University of Iowa. He has gone 23-11 with five saves and a 3.68 ERA (140 ER/342.0 IP) in 178 career outings, all but 17 in relief, covering seven seasons in the Blue Jays minor league system. He made only 20 appearances between 2018-19 due to Tommy John ligament replacement surgery in May of 2018.

Chicago’s 60-man Player Pool roster stands at 58 players, with 28 active players on the major league roster (plus three 10-day injured list players) in Chicago plus infielder Ildemaro Vargas and 26 players in South Bend. The club’s 40-man roster now stands at 40 players.
