Cubs Roster Moves: Jeimer Candelario to IL, Alexander Canario recalled |
DENVER – The Chicago Cubs today placed infielder Jeimer Candelario on the 10-day injured list with a low back strain and recalled outfielder Alexander Canario from Triple-A Iowa.
Canario, 23, made his major league debut September 6 against San Francisco at Wrigley Field, entering the game as a pinch-hitter and going 0-for-1 in his only appearance with the Cubs. He was recalled from Iowa September 1 and optioned prior to yesterday’s game at Colorado. Canario hit .276 (40-for-145) with 12 doubles, eight home runs, 35 RBI and an .866 OPS in 36 games for Triple-A Iowa since his promotion July 14. In his last 16 contests with Iowa August 9-30, Canario batted .333 (23-for-69) with 1.075 OPS thanks to eight doubles and six home runs to go along with 14 runs scored and 18 RBI. The right-handed hitting Canario was acquired by Chicago from San Francisco with right-handed pitcher Caleb Kilian July 30, 2021, for infielder Kris Bryant. In six minor league campaigns, Canario has hit .264 (455-for-1,724) with 103 doubles, 15 triples, 91 home runs, 319 RBI and an .847 OPS in 455 games. He has seen time at all three outfield positions, most extensively in center field (201 games). Candelario, 29, was acquired from the Nationals July 31. In 36 games with the Cubs since August 1, Candelario is batting .237 (28-for-118) with eight doubles, one triple, five home runs, 16 RBI and a .324 OBP.
