Cubs select promising third baseman Gage Workman in Rule 5 Draft

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today selected infielder Gage Workman from Double-A Erie in the Detroit Tigers organization during the MLB phase of the 2024 Rule 5 Draft. The 40-man roster currently stands at 40.

Workman, 25, has batted .248 (135-for-483) with 111 doubles, 24 triples, 57 home runs, 263 RBI, a .327 on-base percentage and a .762 OPS in 472 career minor league games across four seasons, all in the Detroit system. He has hit at least 12 home runs and recorded at least 19 stolen bases in each of his four minor league seasons.

The six-foot four-inch Workman enjoyed a breakout season in 2024, batting .280 (135-for-483) with 29 doubles, six triples, 18 home runs, 89 RBI, 30 stolen bases, a .366 on-base percentage and a .843 OPS in 126 games with Erie. He led all Tigers minor leaguers with 89 RBI and was tied for the organizational lead in doubles, while finishing second in runs (85), third in OPS and tied for third in home runs. He was named the Eastern League Player of the Month in August, after batting .308 (32-for-104) with five doubles, one triple, seven home runs and 22 RBI in 25 games. Following the campaign, he was named to the Eastern League Post-Season All-Star team.

A native of Mesa, Ariz., Workman attended Arizona State University and was selected by the Tigers in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. He was ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Tigers’ No. 29 prospect.
