Roster Moves: Cubs recall lefty Tom Cosgrove, option reliever |
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled left-handed pitcher Tom Cosgrove. In a corresponding move, right-handed pitcher Ethan Roberts has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Cosgrove will wear uniform #38.
Cosgrove, 28, was acquired by the Cubs on April 10 for cash considerations and has not allowed a run in three appearances (4.0 IP) with Iowa. He recorded seven strikeouts, compared to just one walk, contributing to a 1.00 WHIP and a 15.75 strikeouts per nine innings pitched. Prior to the trade, Cosgrove posted a 7.36 ERA (3 ER/3.2 IP) with two strikeouts in four games with Triple-A El Paso (San Diego). Cosgrove has a 1-3 record with one save, a 3.95 ERA (29 ER/66.0 IP), 59 strikeouts and a .221 opponent batting average in 72 career major league games, all with San Diego. The Staten Island, N.Y., native was selected by the Padres in the 12th round of the 2017 draft and made his major league debut on April 29. 2023. Roberts, 27, went 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA (5 ER/8.1 IP) and a 1.20 WHIP in nine relief outings with the Cubs this season since being recalled on April 9. He entered yesterday’s game with a 1.42 ERA (1 ER/6.1 IP), before allowing four earned runs over 2.0 innings of work. The Cubs play the Philadelphia Phillies today at 6:00 p.m. CT at Wrigley Field in a game that can be seen on ESPN and heard on 670 the Score and, in Spanish, on WRTO 1200 AM.
