CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Rowan Wick off the 60-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Trevor Megill to Triple-A Iowa prior to game two of today’s split doubleheader vs. the Milwaukee Brewers. Additionally, left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan has been recalled from Iowa and will serve as tonight’s “27th man” for the club.

Wick, 28, opened the season on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain and was transferred to the 60-day injured list, April 26. He held the opponent scoreless in seven of eight injury rehabilitation outings between High-A South Bend and Triple-A Iowa, July 17-August 8, and in his final four appearances with Iowa, spun 4.0 scoreless innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Wick last season posted a 3.12 ERA (6 ER/17.1 IP) with four saves in 19 relief appearances for the Cubs, walking six and striking out 20, before he landed on the 10-day injured list, September 17, with the left oblique strain. Acquired by the Cubs in a trade with the San Diego Padres for infielder Jason Vosler, November 20, 2018, Wick is 2-2 with a 3.20 ERA (21 ER/59.0 IP), 10 holds and six saves in 60 major league relief appearances between the Padres (2018) and Cubs (2019-20).

Ryan, 29, has no record, one save and a 5.54 ERA (8 ER/13.0 IP) in 12 relief appearances spanning six stints with the Cubs this season. In 19 outings with Iowa, Ryan is 2-0 with one save, a 2.52 ERA (7 ER/25.0 IP) and a .092 WHIP while striking out 24 compared to seven walks.

Ryan is in his fourth season with the Cubs organization after signing with the club on December 29, 2017. The lefthander appeared in 18 games in 2020, going 1-0 with a 5.17 ERA (9 ER/15.2 IP), four holds and one save. In 2019, Ryan went 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA (24 ER/61.0 IP) and 14 holds while limiting left-handed hitters to a .228 average (21-for-92) in a career-high and team-leading 73 games.

Originally selected by the Tigers in the 12th round of the 2010 draft out of Auburndale (Fla.) High School, Ryan is 13-8 with two saves, 26 holds and a 3.97 ERA (96 ER/217.2 IP) in 189 career major league games (seven starts) between the Tigers (2014-17) and Cubs.

Megill, 27, has no record and a 13.50 ERA (13 ER/8.2 IP) in 12 relief outings for Chicago this season, walking six and striking out eight. In 12 relief appearances with Iowa this season, he has posted a 5.14 ERA (8 ER/14.0 IP).
