The Top Cubs moments of 2019 Part 1

by - Staff Writer -

Here at Cubs HQ, we thought it was important to remember that despite this disappointing season, there were many great moments.

Starting today and going throughout next week or so, we will chronicle the best ten moments of the 2019 season.

We are starting with number 10-8.

No. 10 Top Cubs moment:

Ben Zobrist Pitches, Strikes out Yadier Molina.

As the season winded down and the Cubs were eliminated from playoff contention, it seemed evident that the final games of the season may also be the final in Cubs uniforms or careers of some of the players.

Ben Zobrist was one of those players. After four years of playing in pinstripes, Zobrist was one of the most consistent Cubs. Zobrist always delivered professional at-bats and displayed leadership and the clutch gene.

Zobrist will forever be remembered for his game seven go-ahead hits.

Zo also was extremely versatile in Joe Maddon’s lineups.

In what may be the final game of his career, after dealing with a year of ups and downs in his relationship with his wife Julia, Zobrist was put in to pitch against the Cardinals.

Not to mention, Zobrist struck out one of the Cardinals who tormented them the week before.

Zobrist struck out Yadier Molina, in what very well may be the final inning he will ever play in the Big Leagues and what was also the last game Joe Maddon will ever manage as a Cub.

No. 9 Top Cubs moment:

Taylor Davis hits a grand slam to push Cubs for the sweep.

In a great moment that may have slipped the minds of Cubs fans throughout the roller coaster that was the 2019 season.

The Cubs were without Victor Caratini in May due to his wrist injury and brought up Taylor Davis from triple-A Iowa after years of battling in the minors. Taylor Davis struggled in his multiple trips to the big leagues this season, but no hit was more significant than the bomb he hit against the Cardinals in early May.

Davis clubbed a grand slam, closing the door on the Cardinals for the weekend - which powered the Cubs to a sweep over the Red Birds. Not to mention, it was Davis’ first career home run.

No. 8 Top Cubs moment:

A pair of Cubs reach career milestones.

The 2019 season saw many great individual seasons from various Cubs players. Tony Andracki mentioned on my podcast that 16-18 players you could say had good seasons this year.

A few Cubs players reached personal career milestones this season as well, and they came about a month apart.

Anthony Rizzo launched his 200th career dinger in a May 6th win over the Marlins.

Rizzo has hit all but one of his professional home runs in a Cubs uniform, tallying 25 or more in the last six seasons.

Watch Rizzo’ 200th here:

Javier Baez hit his 100th career home run to cap off a comeback victory over the Mets on June 23rd at Wrigley Field.

Baez is a perennial star of the major leagues and a fan favorite across MLB. Dazzling fans and the media with his acrobatic slides, lightning-quick tags, flashy defense, and his overall swagger that he brings to the field.

Watch Javy’s milestone here:

Stay tuned as later this week we will bring you moments seven through five.
