What to make of Mitch Trubisky after huge comeback? |
Watching the Bears first game of the season, and you got a prime example of what it is like to be a Bears fan. You had every kind of emotion you can think of. Sadness, Anger, Frustration, and happiness all in the process of a 60-minute game. Did the Bears get the win? Yes, but it doesn't come without
question marks, especially at the quarterback position regarding Trubisky. Coming into the game against Detroit, all eyes were on Trubisky after winning the quarterback job in training camp. The team declined his fifth-year option and brought in Nick Foles to compete for the starting job. Once it was announced that Trubisky would be the starter, all eyes immediately zeroed in on the man as everyone had mixed feelings about the decision. For Trubisky, week one couldn't have come against a better opponent as he has his highest QB rating against the Lions. I don't know the reason, but for some reason, Trubisky shows up against the Lions, and Chicago fans were hoping that would continue again. After watching the first three-quarters of the game Sunday, Fans were calling for Foles as Trubisky, and the Bears play, for that matter, was hot garbage. Suddenly the fourth quarter began, and Trubisky found something in his game. Not only did he lead the Bears to a touchdown to start the quarter, but he threw three fourth-quarter touchdown passes in the final quarter leading the Bears to the come from behind victory against the Lions. Fans are happy with the win but are they satisfied with how Trubisky played overall? The Lions had a 98.3% chance of winning with four minutes left fourth quarter
The Trubisky we saw through three quarters is not going to get it done, and if he plays like that every week, it will be a long season for Chicago. The Bears were just fortunate enough that the Lions gave the Bears the game in the fourth with a miss field goal from Matt Prater and an apparent game-winning touchdown reception by D'Andre Swift only to see the ball slip through his hands. Trubisky always could play at the level he showed in the fourth quarter, but the consistency has never been there. For Chicago to take the next step as a team, consistency will be the key for Trubisky and the offense. MITCH TRUBISKY FOR THE LEAD!
There is no getting around how clutch Trubisky was in the fourth quarter, and some of the throws he made were flat out impressive. Look at the game-winning score to Anthony Miller. Not only was Miller covered well, but Trubisky placed the ball in a spot where only Miller could come down with it. Ironically enough, the two of them were together on a similar connection last year as those two hooked up for the winning score in Detroit one year ago. So far in his NFL career, Chicago Bears QB Mitch Trubisky has 5 fourth-quarter comebacks and 7 game-winning drives.
It is throws like that where fans can see Trubisky's talent and ability. However, the three quarters before that throw shows fans how much he can struggle also. Not only was he rattled by some of the things the Lions were doing when he had time to throw, but he was also off target. So much so that he overthrew a 6-7 Jimmy Graham. That is extremely hard to do if you try. I noticed throughout the game that, despite the struggles, Trubisky never hung his head. He looked confident and tried to remain in control as much as he could. He has always believed in his ability, but never put the type of run together to gain that sort of confidence. Maybe his fourth-quarter showing will be what he needs to get that confidence. I said coming into the season that Trubisky has five or six weeks to prove he deserves to be the starter. There is no easy game in the NFL, but the first six games for Chicago are the easiest games they have on the schedule. If they can get through these six games at 4-2 or even 5-1, Trubisky will remain the starter long term. On the flip side, should the Bears struggle to go 3-3 or worse, than you can expect Foles to get the call to finish out the season? After watching what I saw on Sunday, I don't think the leash is shorter on Trubisky. Yes, he came up clutch when the Bears needed him to, but they can't afford to have him play like that all season. Chicago Sports radio today: "Glad the Bears got the win, but Mitch Trubisky stinks."
Matt Nagy will approach the first part of the season on a week to week basis regarding Trubisky. He is trusting him with this offense, but he expects the play to be more consistent. Hopefully, a game against the Giants coming up will help him play a complete game. They blame you when you lose.
They complain about you when you win.
I guess that's what happens when you are the quarterback of the Chicago Bears.
