Cubs Rumors: Angels reportedly 'showing interest' in Willson Contreras

by - Senior Editor -

The Chicago Cubs have made some interesting moves this offseason as they try to re-tool their roster for the long-term.

Cubs ace Yu Darvish is now with the San Diego Padres and now here comes another trade rumor about Cubs standout catcher Willson Contreras from MLB insider Ken Rosenthal.

"Angels manager Joe Maddon was a strong advocate for Willson Contreras during their time together with the Cubs, so perhaps it’s no surprise the Angels are showing interest in trading for the catcher, according to major-league sources," he said via The Athletic.

"No deal appears close, but Contreras, 28, would be an excellent fit for the Angels, whose top returning catcher, Max Stassi, might miss the start of the season while recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip."

Obviously, the Cubs would get an impressive haul of players for the All-Star catcher that is currently in his prime.

Maddon knows Contreras very well, and they have a great working relationship in the past as the manager was a father-like figure to the young Contreras.

Contreras hit .243 with 7 homers and 26 RBI last season and has two years left of cheap team control ($15 mil total).
