Cubs make several roster moves

by - Senior Editor -

DETROIT – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Tyler Chatwood and left-handed pitcher Jose Quintana off of the 10-day injured list. To make room on the 28-man roster, right-handed pitcher Jason Adam and outfielder Ian Miller were optioned to the club’s South Bend Alternate Site following last night’s game.

Both Chatwood, who will be the starting pitcher, and Quintana will be available for the Cubs tonight when they continue their three-game series at the Detroit Tigers.

Chatwood, 30, was placed on the 10-day injured list on August 16 (retroactive to August 13) with a mid-back strain. He began the season 2-1 with a 5.40 ERA (9 ER/15.0 IP) in three starts with the Cubs, last making a start on August 6 at Kansas City. Chatwood began the season by winning his first two starts and posting a 0.71 ERA (1 ER/12.1 IP) in those outings before allowing eight runs in 2.1 innings in that start at the Royals.

Quintana, 31, began the season on the 10-day injured list with a left thumb nerve injury and is poised to make his 2020 debut. The southpaw went 13-9 with a 4.68 ERA (89 ER/171.0 IP) in 32 appearances (31 starts) with the Cubs last season, surpassing 30 starts for the seventh season in a row and matching his season-best in wins. Acquired from the White Sox on July 13, 2017, Quintana has gone 33-23 with a 4.23 ERA (202 ER/429.2 IP) in 78 appearances (77 starts) with the Cubs overall.

Adam, 29, has gone 0-1 with a 7.36 ERA (3 ER/3.2 IP) in three relief appearances with the Cubs this year.

Miller, 28, has seen action in one game with the Cubs as a pinch-runner.

Chicago’s 60-man Player Pool roster stands at 58 players, with 28 active players (plus two 10-day injured list players) in Chicago and 28 players in South Bend.
