Jose Quintana injury update

by - Senior Editor -

A sliced thumb apparently is healing well.

Cubs veteran pitcher Jose Quintana suffered a laceration of his left thumb in late June that required surgery to repair a sensory nerve.

Quintana is doing well as he is on schedule to start throwing again soon according to Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy.

Hottovy told reporters that Quintana is on track to start throwing towards the end of this week and has been doing upper body and shoulder work to stay in baseball shape.

In 2019, Quintana had a record of 13-9 with a 4.68 ERA, 152 strikeouts, and 1.39 WHIP.

Cubs President of Operations Theo Epstein said in early July that pitchers will have to step up in the absence of Quintana.

Presumably, Alec Mills will get his opportunity early in the season to show what he can do as a starter once again.

Today is the third anniversary of the Cubs trading for Jose Quintana from the White Sox in exchange for Eloy Jimenez, Dylan Cease, Matt Rose, and Bryant Flete.
