8 Chicago Cubs players are now free agents

by - Senior Editor -

The 2020 season is officially over, with the Los Angeles Dodgers winning the crown last night.

Eight Chicago Cubs players are now free agents (can officially file in 5 days) with the start of the offseason with reliever Andrew Chafin, starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood, outfielder Billy Hamilton, reliever Jeremy Jeffress, second baseman Jason Kipnis, outfielder Cameron Maybin, catcher Josh Phegley and left-hander José Quintana.

It should be interesting to see if the Cubs retain any of those players, including Jeffress, who was sensational in his one-year with the Northsiders.

He had a 1.54 ERA on 0.94 WHIP this past season as he was a closer for a portion of the shortened season while Craig Kimbrel was having a difficult time.

The Cubs also hold three team options with starter Jon Lester ($25 million), first baseman Anthony Rizzo ($16.5 million), and second baseman Daniel Descalso ($3.5 million).

Rizzo is a no-brainer for the club to pick up, and it should be interesting if they try to bring back Lester for one more year in 2021.

Stay tuned to CubsHQ all offseason as we will cover everything going on regarding the Cubs and MLB's Hot Stove.
