Chapman thanks Chicago for their support

by - Senior Editor -

Former Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman re-signed with the New York Yankees for a five-year contract with $86 million. The contract was a record amount for a closer.

"Thanks Chicago Cubs for the support and love given," Chapman tweeted. "Very happy and honored to say I was part of the 2016 WS Champ. Thank you Chicago." #FlytheW

Chapman was 4-1 with a 1.55 ERA with 36 saves and 90 strikeouts during the regular season in 2016. In the postseason in 15.2 innings, he had a 3.45 ERA with four saves while striking out 21.

For his career, he has a 2.08 ERA with 182 saves and 636 strikeouts.

The Cubs could not pay that huge amount for a closer and they went with a more cost-effective Wade Davis contract for one year and ten million.
