by -

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Trevor Cahill off of the 15-day disabled list.

Cahill will start the first game of today’s day-night doubleheader against the Milwaukee Brewers at Wrigley Field, serving as the club’s “26th man.”

The 28-year-old Cahill is 1-3 with two holds and a 3.07 ERA (14 ER/41.0 IP) in 33 relief appearances with the Cubs this season. He has struck out 46 batters in 41.0 innings while limiting foes to a .209 batting average, including a .197 mark by lefties and a .216 mark by righties. Cahill was placed on the disabled list last month with right knee patellar tendinitis. He made six rehab starts with Triple-A Iowa as part of his return, going 0-3 with a 4.58 ERA (10 ER/19.2 IP), fanning 25 batters in 19.2 innings.

Since joining the Cubs on September 1, 2015, Cahill has combined to go 2-3 with four holds and a 2.79 ERA (18 ER/58.0 IP) in 44 relief outings. He has struck out 68 batters in 58.0 innings and held opponents to a .192 batting average.

Today marks Cahill’s first major league start since April 26, 2015 with the Atlanta Braves at the Philadelphia Phillies, a 5-4 setback.
