Cubs sign $35 million contract extension with Nico Hoerner

by - Senior Editor -

The Northsiders have finally locked up one of their talented players for a few years.

Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner has agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $35 million according to multiple reports, including ESPN.

Hoerner, a second baseman, has shown great potential in his young career.

In the 2022 season, he hit .281 with a career-high 10 homers, 20 stolen bases, and 55 RBIs. He has demonstrated solid defensive skills and has also shown versatility by playing both second base and shortstop.

The new deal buys out one year of free agency for Hoerner, but he will still be eligible for free agency at the end of the 2025 season, at the age of 29. This means that if he continues to perform well, he could be in line for an even bigger payday in the future.

Hoerner is only the second homegrown Cubs player to get an extension since 2011. The only other homegrown player to get a deal under the Jed Hoyer and previous Theo Epstein regime was David Bote in 2019.

It remains to be seen how Hoerner will perform in the coming years, but this contract extension is a positive sign for Cubs fans. It shows that the team is willing to invest in their young talent and build a competitive team for the future.

With Hoerner locked up for the next three years, the Cubs have one less thing to worry about as they look to build a winning team.
