Nico Hoerner injury update

by - Senior Editor -

Chicago Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner talked to 670 The Score on Tuesday about several topics including his health.

The standout second baseman is currently dealing with a hamstring injury, but he remains hopeful that he will be able to return to action soon.

In the interview, Hoerner described the injury as "day-to-day," indicating that it's not a significant concern.

Hoerner had to exit early from the Cubs' loss on Monday night with left hamstring tightness, but he said that he's "happy" with how he's recovering.

He didn't provide any further details about the injury or whether the team would need to make a roster move in his absence.

The 24-year-old infielder has been a key part of the Cubs' lineup this season, hitting .303 with two home runs and 19 RBI in 35 games.

He's also been a solid defender at second base, helping the Cubs stay competitive in the National League Central.

"He's incredibly important," Cubs pitcher Marcus Stroman said after Monday's game. "I think he's truly one of the most underrated players in the league, just everything he does all around on the field. Defensively, offensively, how he battles, never gives away an at-bat, and how clutch he is. It's hard to put in words how instrumental he is to our entire team. So yea, hopefully, it's nothing serious as far as the injury. Hopefully, we'll get him back out there fairly soon. He's one of those guys that kind of make us go as a team."

We will give you an update on his MRI later tonight when we hear from Cubs officials.

Update: The Cubs announced Tuesday that he is day-to-day with his left hamstring. The MRI showed a mild strain this morning. He will be getting treatment today. He might be able to avoid an IL stint.

Here is the play that Hoerner got hurt on:
